Newby T he need for a bridge between basic learn-ing research and educational practice has long been discussed. To ensure a strong connection between these two areas, Dewey (cited Cognitivism: Jean Piaget's Genetic Epistemology Theory : Cognition is defined as "the act or process of knowing in the broadest sense; specifically, an intellectual process by which knowledge is gained from perception or ideas" (Webster's Dictionary). H Perry rejected the notion of stages (as described by Piaget, Freud etc) as being too static, instead introducing the concept of positionality. He laid greater emphasis on the idea that learners approach knowledge from a variety of standpoints, arguing that gender , race , culture and socioeconomic class influence our approach to learning just as much as our stage of cognitive development. Piaget described himself as a genetic epistemologist. His work focused on developing a general theory of knowledge, how a child develops a knowledge of his or her world, and the role that biology plays in that development.
